SCR faults are the single most common Mercedes drivability complaint we see in support. The count-down to "engine start not possible" is real — but the fix is rarely the part the customer already replaced.
The diagnostic sequence
- Read all ECUs with Xentry, not just the engine — SCR logic lives in the CDI/DDE, NOx sensors and the AdBlue control unit.
- Check NOx sensor plausibility values at idle and 2500 rpm; a sensor reading 0 ppm or stuck high is the #1 cause.
- Test DEF quality with a refractometer before condemning the pump — crystallized fluid kills injectors.
- Verify pump pressure against the spec in Xentry guided tests (roughly 9 bar on most BlueTEC units).
Replace components only after the guided tests point at them. A misdiagnosed NOx sensor followed by an unnecessary pump replacement is a $1,200 lesson in skipping step one.
